The first Award of the Prince Laurent Foundation was the work of Hanneke Beaumont, of Dutch descent but who has ben living and working in Belgium for many years. She was a student at the Académie de Braine l'Alleud, where she acquired the first rudiments of sculpting, and later studied at the famous Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Cambre, founded by Henri Van De Velde. In 1994 she was the laureate of the annual prize of the Académie du Centre International d'Art Contemporaine Château Beychevelle in France.

After a short abstract period, she devoted most of her time to portrait. Then after a few years of this experience she "found she could dispense with a model", as she said herself. "What interests me, is the reflection of their personality which expresses some of the attitudes and mentalities typical for our epoch".

By a combination of a classic treatment - the tunics worn by her characters are voluntarily timeless - and characterized by a modern approach, in which she expresses their emotional and inner mental life by their attitude and in particular their gaze, Hanneke Beaumont succeeds in achieving an exceptional balance between the equanimity and the tension, the courage and the resignation, the patience and the waiting.

The second award of the Foundation, the first specimen of which will be presented for the first time towards the end of 2003, is the work of sculptor Richard Texier. It represents a mythical animal hovering above a terrestrial globe.

Born in 1955 in Niort, in the French department Deux-Sevres, Richard Texier is one of the most important artists of his generation, and the results of his creation have been shown in numerous exhibitions, both in France and abroad. By his artistic production, whether it may be painting, sculptures or engravings, he recreates in his fashion a poetic picture of the world, and the result confirms the individuality and depth of a work which is deeply embedded in the panorama of contemporary art.

Nowadays settled in New York after a first halt in his atelier in the Poitou marshes, Richard Texier considers himself impervious to style and fashion, as well as to gossip. The water and the earth are the two essential components of his work.
